Brexit has failed and was totally mismanaged, claims Farage

Brexit, according to Nigel Farage, has “failed” economically because the UK’s exit has been “mismanaged.”

The former Ukip leader denied that Britain would have been better off staying in the EU, but he said that the country had not taken advantage of the economic benefits of leaving.

High taxes and even more red tape than when the UK was a member of the EU are “driving away” firms, according to the Brexit architect.

In his attack on the Conservatives, the GB News anchor also refused to rule out a future political comeback.

Asked if economically the UK would have been better staying in the EU, Mr Farage said: “I don’t think that for a moment.

“But what I do think is we haven’t actually benefited from Brexit economically when we could have done.

“What Brexit has proved, I’m afraid, is that our politicians are about as useless as the commissioners in Brussels. We’ve mismanaged this totally.

“And if you look at simple things such as takeovers, corporation tax, we are driving business away from our country.

“Arguably, now we’re back in control we’re regulating our own businesses even more than they were as EU members. Brexit has failed.”

Pressed if a comeback is on the horizon, Mr Farage added: “I wouldn’t rule it out, it’s not at the top of my bucket list.

“But frankly, we’ve not delivered on borders, we’ve not delivered on Brexit and the Tories have let us down very, very badly.”

Downing Street this morning said Rishi Sunak disagreed with Mr Farage’s criticism.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “I think the Prime Minister has talked about the benefits of Brexit on a number of occasions.”

Asked if Mr Sunak believed Brexit has been a success, the spokesman added: “Yes. I highlighted some of the elements that will bring benefits to the public. Clearly we recognise that globally there are a number of challenges on things like inflation. The Covid pandemic, war in Europe, which are having different impacts across countries in Europe and beyond.
